Summer in Napa A St Helena Vineyard Novel Marina Adair 9781611099737 Books Reviews
I fell in love with Marina Adair's previous book, Kissing Under the Mistletoe, so I jumped at the chance when she asked if I would review Summer in Napa. I have to start off talking about the cover. Many of you know I fully admit my first impressions of a book are set by the cover and I am not a huge fan of this cover. However, I did really enjoy the book! So please don't judge this one by its cover.
The DeLuca brothers made my heart swoon in Kissing Under the Mistletoe and I was eager to dig into Marco's story. Knowing he was best friends with the douche bag who cheated on Lexi I was interested to see how that was going to be spun. It is hard to recover from being the wingman of a douche without being considered one yourself. Never fear! Marco won my heart over just as much as his older brother, Gabe, did and I fell in love. Lexi was just as likeable as the woman trying to recover and keep her held high after being betrayed by the one who promised to love and protect her.
What makes Marina Adair's books so good are that the supporting characters are just as fun to read as the main characters. Of course, the other DeLuca brothers are present and the interaction between each other will make you burst out laughing at times. And then there are the meddling but well meaning grannies who are hilarious. The stories just wouldn't be as good as they are without the full cast.
If you haven't read Adair's books yet you are missing out. Summer in Napa is a sweet and fun read that is the perfect book to add to your summer reading pile.
All of the books in this series are great reads about 2 wine growing families in St. Helena, California in the Napa Valley. Ever since Charles Baudouin lost the love of his life to Geno Deluca there has been a feud between the families The characters are the Deluca family, Gabriel, (the patriarch since his father's death), Nathaniel, Marcus, Trey and their sister Abigail the Baudouins, Jonah, Dax, Adam and their sister Francesca. This book (#2) gives us Marcus DeLuca and Alexis Moreau. Alexis is a chef, whose ex-husband and business partner, Jefferey (not a chef by the way) has screwed her over and taken control of their restaurant. She has returned to her small hometown depressed at her failure, maritally and financially. She of course meets her childhood sweetheart Marc in a most embarrassing way. She tries to rebuild her life by working in her Aunt Pricilla's bakery and eventually seeks to have her own restaurant and catering.business. Well Jefferey is doing his best to screw her over yet even more and Marc comes to her aid but Lexi doesn't want to be hurt again by any man.
So now we have our conflict and since there is always a happy ending in Marina Adair's books, you know where this is headed, but as I said...always a great read to get there.
Every so often you have to check the books your purchased but haven’t read. There is a reason you did the one-click in the first place.
This is one of those stories that I love. It is a perfect rainy day book that I can curl up in my reading chair and enjoy. It has a little of everything I love in a romance novel, a woman who made a bad choice, lost everything in her divorce, gets help from a longtime friend who loves her and has loved her for years. Summer in Napa is part of a series where each individual book focuses on one of the DeLuca family. Marc DeLuca is the lead brother in Summer.
Alexis “Lexi” Moreau is the heroine in this story. She gives up a lot of her dreams and life plans to support her husband’s quest to open a top New York restaurant. Unfortunately, she catches the sleaze bag, Jeff dipping his stick in the soux chef, Natasha. To make the situation worse, the day after the divorce is final Jeff marries his side dish and moves on, however he manages to convince the judge that all of Lexi’s recipes belong to him and the restaurant.
Dejected and lost Lexi moves back to Napa Valley with the hope of working towards her dream of opening a bistro with her grandmother. Her adventures when she moves home are comedic and hopeful. Lexi’s grandmother and her grandmother’s friends decide that they are going to help Lexi move on by setting her up on dates with men on a dating website. Her dating adventures are a hoot but her grandmother takes offense when Lexi wants out of these dates.
Marc DeLuca is part of her clique from high school. He is also her husband’s best friend. Marc is a bit of a rebel and turned away from the family winery business. His goal is to renovate an old hotel and make it something special. This causes some tension among the DeLuca clan and makes Marc’s life a little more difficult.
What Lexi doesn’t know about her old friend is that Marc has always wanted Lexi romantically but doesn’t want to let her know because of the “man code”. Marc has bouts of jealousy when he sees Lexi struggle with some dates that her grandmother set up for her. To appease her grandmother, he convinces Lexi to “date” him exclusively (in front of other only) while she actually spends he time working on her bistro plans.
The characters grow to be more than friends while working on their individual careers. I love how Lexi’s character is developed. She often appears a push over when, in fact, she is reeling from the many curve balls that her ex throws at her. She feels sorry for herself a little then always picks herself back up and focuses on her goals.
Marc is a loving hero. He does keep secrets from Lexi that come back to bit him but it is obvious to the reader that he is always trying to do the right thing. Jeff deceives his friends as well as Lexi. Many of the exchanges between Marc and Lexi are funny and sometimes a little embarrassing as they become comfortable with each other.
This is very good book. I enjoy the laughs, the romance, and the ending is very satisfying. I’m angry with myself for waiting so long to read this book and I’m hoping right on the other books in this series. I also have to mention that I purchased the audio version of the book too. Renee Raudman is an excellent narrator. I enjoyed the audio as much as actually reading the book. This will be on my re-read/repeat listen list. Marina Adair is a talented writer—one that I will continue to read in the future.
