Ghost Girl in the Corner The Shadowshaper Cypher Novella 1 eBook Daniel José Older
This fantasy novella, like Shadowshaper, the first full-length book in the series, is set in New York City’s poor, mostly black Bedford-Stuyvesant district. Its main characters are Tee and her lover/partner, Izzy, both friends of Sierra, the equally lively young woman who starred in the first book. Sierra has taught all her friends, including Tee and Izzy, how to “shape” ghosts by driving them into art works, which allows them to express themselves. Thus Tee is not too surprised, while working in the church basement to continue the local newspaper that their older friend Manny, killed in the first book, left behind, to see a “ghost girl” in the corner of the room. Lacking an available art work, she pushes the girl into the newspaper’s linotype machine, with which the girl spells out “HELP HER.” But who needs help?—and who is the girl herself? Tee senses that the ghost wants her existence kept a secret, which leads to misunderstandings with Izzy, who misinterprets Tee’s distraction as a lack of interest in her. A further mystery is that Loni, the star of the local sports team, has disappeared, and both Tee and Izzy join the neighborhood’s efforts to find her. Naturally, all three of these mysteries prove to be related. As was the case with Shadowshaper, this story’s best features are its lively characters and the vivid portrayal of their neighborhood, which clearly makes up in community feeling what it lacks in material goods. (An additional benefit, for those of us who have trouble understanding spoken rap lyrics, is the chance to read the lyrics sung by Izzy in her performance persona of “King Impervious.”) Tee and Izzy and the ups and downs of their relationship are particularly striking, as is their older friend, “Uncle” Nathan, who proves to have some unusual friends of his own. The interlocking mysteries are also satisfyingly solved.
Unlike the case with many series, this story doesn’t depend heavily on the reader’s having read the previous one; it can be enjoyed quite well on its own. (I was glad to hear that a second full-length Shadowshaper novel is expected soon, however.) I recommend it not only to fans of Shadowshaper but to anyone who enjoys an urban fantasy with strong female characters who are believable ordinary teenagers rather than the usual sexy twenty-something blend of professional cop and magic user. The two main characters are lesbians, but there is no explicit sex, so it shouldn’t bother most people who assemble “young adult” reading lists.

Ghost Girl in the Corner The Shadowshaper Cypher Novella 1 eBook Daniel José Older Reviews
Love this more than Shadowshaper! Getting to know Izzy a little better is just the icing on the cake. Dead girls, lots of mystery, and more shadowshaping makes this novella feel like a full novel.
YASSSSS this novella packed a punch! Was so glad to get into Tee and Izzy's heads. And seeing the rest of peeps from Sierra's crew.
And man DJO can spin a tale cuz from the minute Tee spotted ghost girl I wanted/needed to know what her story was. And bit by bit it unfolds. All the while intertwined with seeing what's going on with Tee and Izzy's relationship.
Not only that we get the story of two missing girls. One for whom it's too late, but for the other there's still hope (maybe?, no spoilers) it's a sobering tale, one that sadly, happens all too often. So amidst all my chuckling at the character's antics this part got me right in the gut.
Coupled with A+ hilarious dialogue and intriguing characters (uncle Neville!!) and a lil cameo from one of my fave characters from the Bone Street Rumba series (again, no spoilers go read P) I thoroughly enjoyed this novella.
And there's a sneak peak of book 2 in the Shadowshaper series, Shadowhouse Fall so i neeeeed it now!!
Ugh I can't even form a coherent review of how good this is. Such a great series, such a great author. This works best if you've read "Shadowshaper" but stands on its own pretty well.
So full of vivid imagery. I loved all of the characters. They were so lively and specifically written.
This was a great novella. I am a huge fan of the characters in Older's books. I cannot wit to read the sequel next year. Great quick read with the characters I am attached too.
While technically it can stand-alone, I feel I probably would've been more invested if I'd read the main series. It was well-written and interesting overall. Its nice to find good novellas because sometimes they're just the right length.
Loved
Ghost Girl In The Corner!
