I love Regency romances! I read the two prior books in this series and liked them. This one wasn't quite as good. The heroine was a little too flighty for me, and the hero was a little too stiff. Their storyline felt a little caricature-ish. I didn't think they had much chemistry. I'll hope for better in book 4.Tags : Wish Upon A Duke (The Dukes' Club Book 3) - Kindle edition by Eva Devon. Wish Upon A Duke The Dukes' Club Book 3 edition by Eva Devon Romance eBooks Reviews
Continuing in my cynical, cranky-pants mode, I am grudgingly giving this three stars.
The sweet, whimsical and now carefree widowed h has settled in the Highlands much to the dismay of in-lust but grumpy Highland Duke neighbor. He's an ex-lusty womanizing rake that settled down to gloom and doom respectability due to his father's disgusting carousing, womanizing and so forth ways. Didn't help that the father broke the H's mother's heart and died raving of the French disease.
The h has two couples and one extra male friend visiting from England, the demonic dominator off all things Scottish. All Sassenach's and the men are all Dukes, of course. The couple are also so winningly, whimsically and nauseatingly in love.
Finally, the Duke (the cranky Scottish one) succumbs to our plump, curvy heroine, and she puts the light back in his life. Too bad he yanks it out from her when he makes it clear that with her rep as a Merry Widow, she's not good enough for him. Spine and self-respect intact, she leaves for England after leaving him a note. It's one thing to have a light-hearted affair you know will probably end, but having it spelled out that she's good enough to have an affair with but not marry is too much for her.
He takes the sword out of his ... backend, and leaves for London to woo and win her back.
The book was cute and sweet, and if you are in the mood for a hunky big Scot who knows his way around the femme form (and who doesn't) as well as a winsome and sassy heroine then this is a good one. Some of the banter and antics of her friends was just a little too forced and twee for me, but, see above, I am in a cynical and cranky mood.
All that needs to be done is for someone who is well versed in spelling and grammar to edit this book, and it would be a 5 star in my library of read books!
Too many times was the use of 'to' when it obviously should have been 'too'.
Extremely aggravating to have to read a sentence multiple times, in order to figure out what it was actually supposed to be.
If I hadn't liked the story so much I would have just abandoned it to the far corners of my library.
I liked this story a lot. The characters in this book series are a likeable bunch. Plus, a cool Scottish setting is always good during a hot summer day!
Just a little side note Did the handsome Scot's eye color change between the first & fifth chapters? I think they start as brown/amber & are described later as cobalt/blue. Also, I think there might be some editing required regarding the girl/boy descriptions after the babies are born. Curious to see if anyone else notices that the babes' sexes seem to switch (??)
Loved the story line between Duncan and Imogen. It's all about his ability to get past the past and move forward. For her, it's about her tenacity in remaining who she is rather than what others might want her to be.
This is well written for the plot. But the author needs a better proof reader. Words were misspelled and pronoun genders mixed up. At first the baby was a girl, then referred to as a boy, etc. that part was annoying.
Please, please fix the errors. Between the mis-spellings, grammatical snags and inconsistencies (really...baby boy or baby girl?), it is very hard to give this book the review it deserves. What could have been a beautiful story of accepting the one you love as they are turned instead to a book I had to keep stepping out of to make sense of what I was reading. Hoping an update comes through the soon!
Book 3 of the Duke's Club series, was available free, but was so much fun to read, I would have paid for it.
The Hero is an arse, with a temper. In the beginning of the story, he is easily manipulated by his man of business, into believing that his English neighbor is trespassing and poaching his grouse. ( The Author never does have this powerful Duke confront the liar).
The Hero, of course ends up eating humble pie so often throughout the story, it's a wonder he doesn't end up ill.
The Heroine is intelligent and funny with an odd past, that I would have liked to have seen filled out more.
There are a few parts in the last half of the book that dragged for me. But that's just my taste in stories. I prefer a little more ' whodunit ' and less hand wringing soul searching.
Overall, I liked the story. And would recommend it.
I really enjoyed the story line of this book but the grammar errors really almost destroyed it. Plus there were story line errors. In one page the baby is a girl and in the next page a boy. Things like this get in the way of the story because I find myself looking for more errors instead of concentrating on the story. This book needs to go back to the author or editor for some serious "fixes". All these errors keep me from checking out more books by this author
I regret to say that I paid for this book. The first 1/3 of the story was sooo boring that I skimmed it. The entire story was so full of typos, wrong use of words, even in the same paragraph (alter and altar when discussing aversion to marriage), and incorrect punctuation. The worse mistake was when a friend delivers her baby girl at the heroine's home and two pages later, it is described as a boy child. Agree with another reader/reviewer that this book "screams" for proofreading. However, I also feel that this plot line is weak and unbelievable.
