This book is permanently on my shelf for rereads. Set in a small mountain town in North Carolina, it brims with action and intrigue without going overboard. The characters' voices are true to the region, and the family mysteries and aspirations keep the plot moving and twisting to a surprising but inevitable conclusion. This is a somewhat challenging book, given the complexity of voices/characters, but one expects this in generational sagas. As another reviewer mentioned, some of the grammar and formatting could have been edited for an easier read, but much of what appears to be "wrong" is a part of the dialect and essential to the story, the characters, and the region.Tags : Ghosts of The Soon Departed [T. Ghosts of The Soon Departed T A Epley 9780967191362 Books Reviews
A sweeping multi-generational epic, a haunting story about the search for lost civil war blood money but also a search for identity. I thoroughly enjoyed this book in a matter of days. Told masterfully from the voices of many, author T.A. Epley sets the pace for an intriguing series of books on obsession. If you are looking to be completely engrossed in a story, to be entertained by a twisting plot, and to savor fine prose, I encourage you to buy this book and pace your reading pleasure.
The story concept was a good one, with a many areas of local interest. A more in-depth treatment of the history of the area would have been nice. Also, a good editor could improve this book. Still, the writer shows a lot of promise.
My test of a new author is determining, upon finishing the book, if I would seek out more of that author's work. In this case, the answer was an unequivocal, 'yes.'
The characters are well-developed, the plot is well-paced, and the structuring of the plot is fresh and interesting. The dialogue is sharp, and there are several points where I laughed out loud.
Ultimately, this book is more than a parable of greed's effects on the human soul, it's an examination of life in rural Burke county NC, and it reads with affection for the land and it's people.
In short, this is one worth adding to your bookshelf!
The Ghosts of the Soon Departed is absolutely a favorite of mine, from start to finish, every detail of every scene was incredibly descriptive and the attention to detail is meticulous. Page by page the story unfolds spanning four generations in isolated rural western North Carolina. Beginning near the end of the Civil War in 1864 each generation meets a different fate as they pursue the mystery of the Civil War blood money.
Epley has done a exceptional job of putting together a very realistic and gripping story of the lives of each generation with very vivid details and some really intense moments, he understands how to create characters and plots and masterfully weaved the two together. The great blend of characters are perfectly developed as they come to life on the pages complete and not one dimensional. There is so much to say, but I don't want to betray the authors surprising twist for the reader.
A true treasure, this is a book that should not be missed, it is the kind of book and story that remains with you long after you turn the last page.
